How can we improve the financial position of our pension fund clients and achieve better portfolio characteristics in a low expected return environment? How can we provide our best advice on the optimal asset allocation and interest rate hedging strategy for our clients? How do we guide our clients on developing their investment beliefs and which elements need to be considered for hedging their currency risk? And how do we analyze the impact from allocating to different Emerging Market Debt segments or the behavior of the strategic portfolio in periods of unexpected growth or high inflation?
Your primary function will be to answer all the questions above and more. We advise APG’s clients (large pension funds) independently on their strategic portfolio construction and long-term investment plans. Your advice will consist of memo’s, presentations and verbal communication to the executive offices, investment committees, and boards of the pension funds. At the same time, you will write some of the clients’ most important policy documents related to strategic asset allocation. In your role you will be expected to acquire overall knowledge of all the aspects of our clients’ investment policies and to be able to see the importance of and the connections between different topics relevant for these clients.
Some of the activities involved are:
- Conduct research and analytics on a variety of strategic asset allocation topics;
- Discuss these analytics with members of the executive offices;
- Participate in meetings of the clients’ investment committee and board;
- Write the long-term strategic investment plan and annual investment plans;
- Write memos on various ad hoc issues related to the strategic portfolio;
- Contribute to ALM-studies conducted for our clients.
The Economics & Strategic Asset Allocation (ESAA) team is part of Strategic Portfolio Advice (SPA) with the Fiduciary department. SPA is responsible for the Strategic Asset Allocation advice to pension fund clients. This includes for example the strategic investment plans, ALM studies but also a range of other services such as an overview and segmentation of investment categories, investment cases per asset class, studies on monetary policy and specific market developments. Within SPA, you will work closely with the teams of ALM, Research & Analytics and your other colleagues within ESAA. In the ESAA team there are two roles: one role is focused on Strategic Portfolio Construction & Advisory. The other role is focused on medium to longer term developments in the economy and financial markets.
You will be based in Amsterdam.
The Senior Strategist we are looking for is numerate, articulate and of an inquisitive mindset. You have experience in building relations and engaging with colleagues across the breadth of the organization and clients. You show a strong team spirit combined with an ability to work independently on a wide range of projects simultaneously.
We ask for:
- At least 8 years of practical experience in strategic portfolio construction, institutional advisory or portfolio management;
- A deep understanding of asset class behavior and risk mitigation for institutional clients (preferably Dutch pension funds);
- A keen understanding of the economy and financial markets and the impact on the construction of strategic portfolios;
- Ability to translate complicated matters into advice that is understandable to pension funds board members;
- Capacity to develop your role to innovate, to adapt to rapidly evolving needs, and to implement change.
Advisory memos for our clients are written in Dutch and presentations and discussions with our clients are in Dutch. Therefore, perfect fluency in Dutch (both verbal and written) is an absolute requirement
for this position. A good command of English (essential).
